Officially increase the visa duration to 90 days from August 15 2023

On the morning of June 24, with 470 out of 475 delegates present, the National Assembly approved a bill amending and supplementing a number of articles of the Law on Entry and Exit of Vietnamese citizens and the Law on Entry, Exit, Transit, and Residence of Foreigners in Vietnam. The law takes effect from 15/8/2023.

Accordingly, the National Assembly agreed to extend the duration of the electronic visa from 30 days to 90 days, valid for multiple entry.

The National Assembly also agreed to increase the temporary stay at the border gate for people entering the country on a unilateral visa exemption basis from 15 days to 45 days.

Extend the duration of e-visa to 90 days, increase visa exemption to 45 days:

Reporting to the National Assembly deputies on this law, Chairman of the National Defense and Security Committee Le Tan Toi said that there was an opinion to review the regulations on the duration of electronic visas to ensure compliance with international treaties and the principle of reciprocity with other countries in order to attract tourists and develop socio-economic development.

“The law has increased the duration of the e-visa up to 90 days, valid for one time or multiple times to meet the needs of international tourists, creating favorable conditions for foreigners who want to enter Vietnam to study. , market survey, investment search and promotion, especially in cases where there is a need to go to many countries in the region and return to Vietnam to assess and compare the possibility of expanding investment and business. in Vietnam,” said Mr. Le Tan Toi.

With the increase of the temporary stay at the border gate for people entering the country under the visa exemption category, some comments suggest clarifying the basis of the 45-day regulation; propose to increase it to 60 or 90 days to be most convenient for our country and foreigners entering Vietnam.

In this regard, the National Assembly Standing Committee said that countries such as Thailand, Singapore ... are applying a visa exemption policy with a temporary stay of up to 45 days, 90 days.

In addition, during the discussion, some other opinions suggested adding "other information decided by the Government" to ensure flexibility in the application of the law. Absorbing this opinion, the National Assembly Standing Committee added "other information prescribed by the Government" to the law to ensure flexibility in practice when situations arise.

Open visa policy goes hand in hand with the growth of visitors:

According to Ms. Tran Thi Phuong Nhung, Deputy Director of the Department of International Cooperation, Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the open visa policy has always gone hand in hand with the growth of international tourists.

Specifically, according to a study on the impact of visa policy on visitor growth by the World Tourism Organization in collaboration with the Global Travel Association, if visa exemption is implemented, the growth rate of tourists will reach 16%, if implementation of the e-visa policy, this figure increases to 8% and if only the visa-free policy is applied, the growth of visitors will only increase by 4%.

Therefore, the adjusted and supplemented visa policies are reasonable and timely decisions that both meet the needs of the tourism industry and meet the expectations of the tourism business community as well as international tourism.

Regarding the task in the coming time, the tourism industry in general and the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism in particular will have to be responsible for communicating those policies to all businesses that send and receive visitors to Vietnam, including the sending market and the receiving market so that they have a deeper understanding and understanding of the policies given.
