'Hunting' zero VND airline tickets

Nguyen Ly, living in Hanoi, felt lucky when she found two 0 VND tickets on May 10 for herself and her son, from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi in October. Ly decided right away when she saw the ticket price was more than 600,000 VND per person. "Too cheap compared to the general level" Ly said.
When Ly checked the price on the website, this route had two flights of 0 VND, flying at 4:55 or 11:00 p.m. The female tourist regretted not knowing the information about 0 VND tickets when she bought a one-way ticket from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, so she had to spend nearly 3.6 million VND for two tickets.

There are currently two companies selling "super cheap" tickets, with Vietjet Air offering tickets for 0 VND and Vietravel Airlines selling tickets for 8,000 VND, flight time from August to December.

Thanh Duong, living in Hanoi, is also looking for a 0 VND ticket at noon on May 12 to go to Da Lat, Phu Quoc or Hue. She said she could only see the ticket on her phone, but not on her computer. Tourists commented that the ticket price is cheap, plus taxes and fees it costs about 700,000 VND for the Hanoi - Hue route. However, flight times are all early in the morning or late at night and on the day of departure at the end of the year, the weather can be stormy so tourists decide not to buy. She said the biggest expense when traveling is airfare, so booking a date too far away can bring many risks such as being busy with work and health. "If you have to give up your ticket, it's a waste," she said.

Hoang Mai, living in Hanoi, said she had "hunted" for 0 VND and 8,000 VND tickets for a three-day trip to Da Nang in September but was not successful. She was quite "disappointed" when she hunted for about an hour every day and "didn't see any tickets".
Ms. Hoang Tuyet, Director of Top One Travel, said 0 VND tickets are sold in random batches, to stimulate tourism demand. These types of tickets are few and run out quickly. When adding taxes and fees, the total amount customers spend for a domestic round-trip flight is about 1.5 million VND.
"Recently, air ticket prices have been high, so this 0 VND ticket is of interest," Ms. Tuyet said and advised tourists to be alert and avoid being scammed by agents who cannot reserve seats in advance.

Some people working at the airline ticket office shared that there is no way to "take advantage" when buying 0 VND tickets. It all depends on luck.

Mr. Tran Huy Cong, Head of Sales Development Department of Vietravel Airlines, said that 8,000 VND tickets account for a maximum of 10% of the airline's total tickets sold, mainly targeting customers who plan at least two or three months in advance.
"Opening sales remotely helps us optimize revenue and stimulate customers' need to hunt for tickets," he said.

According to Mr. Hoang Minh, an expert in the aviation field, tickets of 0 VND, or equivalent for each airline, are often sold during off-peak periods with "off-the-shelf" routes (one-way has passengers, one-way has no passengers). . For example, the Hanoi - Phu Quoc flight on Friday will be crowded on the way out but very few on the return trip. If you buy during these days, you will have "a little more opportunity" to hunt for tickets. 0 VND tickets are released day by day. In each flight, airlines will have a price range from low to high, allocated to optimize profits. Although the airline's daily ticket sales time can last about two hours, the number of tickets sold for each route is very small, sometimes only 2-3 tickets.
Actual surveys show that super cheap tickets have departure dates mainly during the year-end period, the off-peak period of domestic tourism. If you book a normal ticket, the amount you have to pay for the Hanoi - Phu Quoc route in early September is 2 million VND round trip, about 500,000 VND higher than the 0 VND ticket. In October, ticket prices are about 2.4 million VND round trip for weekends, flight times are good. "Ticket prices during these periods are inherently very good," Mr. Minh said and assessed that super cheap tickets are a marketing method of airlines, thereby increasing access to customers.
