Hoi An allows old town households to welcome guests to stay with them

In order for tourists to experience and explore daily activities, Hoi An city is piloting for people to welcome tourists into their homes to eat and stay with them.

On May 20, Mr. Tong Quoc Hung, Head of Hoi An's Culture and Information Department, said that the pilot area for the experiential accommodation model with residents of Hoi An ancient town is the house in the alley (deep in the alley), the alley area. Area I and areas adjacent to Area I; House frontage in areas I and IIA, old town.

Households allowed to welcome guests to stay with them must be the homeowner, a local resident of Hoi An, physically living at the registered address. The family planning to welcome guests to stay with them is a family of typical culture and reputation in the local community.

Each household informs about the forms and contents, living time, and activities at home to make it convenient for guests to experience and participate. Activities must ensure housing conditions as well as regulations of the 2017 Law on Tourism.

Hoi An authorities require to ensure good services other than accommodation, especially experience and discovery services associated with daily life activities.

To carry out the pilot, households submit an application to participate in the accommodation model and experience with old town residents along with relevant legal documents in the locality of residence. The Department of Culture and Information presides over and coordinates with relevant branches and localities to organize inspections, actual surveys of the house and propose decisions.

According to Mr. Hung, up to now, in area I of the old town center, accommodation services have not been organized but are reserved for trading and sightseeing. "This pilot creates new products for tourists to experience in the heritage area. Only when households meet the conditions will it be approved," Mr. Hung said.

According to statistics, Hoi An ancient town has more than 1,000 houses and ancient relics. Of which about 10% is managed by the state; 20% is owned by the collective, including clan churches, guild halls, and family memorial houses. The remaining 70% is privately owned, of which 30% is owned by people of Hoi An origin, 40% is transferred to people from outside the province. Among the original Hoi An houses, many homeowners live elsewhere, and houses in the old town are only rented out. Many houses are uninhabited, open for business during the day, and closed at night.
