Special notes
- If you hold two passports, one of which is included in the visa exemption country list, you can still benefit from visa-free travel.
- If your nationality is not on the visa exemption list, you need to obtain a valid e-visa to enter Vietnam.
Latest visa exemption updates
- Under Decree No. 221, Vietnam has introduced a special 5-year visa exemption card for select high-profile foreigners—such as top investors, scientists, executives, and cultural figures, allowing multiple entries and stays of up to 90 days per visit.
- On August 11, the Government issued Resolution 229 on visa exemption under the tourism stimulus program for citizens of 12 countries, including: the Kingdom of Belgium, the Republic of Bulgaria, the Republic of Croatia, the Czech Republic, the Swiss Confederation, Luxembourg, Hungary, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Republic of Poland, Romania, the Slovak Republic, and the Republic of Slovenia. - Citizens of these countries entering Vietnam for tourism purposes are granted a temporary stay of 45 days, regardless of passport type. This visa exemption policy will be effective from August 15, 2025, until the end of August 14, 2028.
- March 5, 2025: Vietnam extends visa waiver until 2028 for citizens of Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the UK, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland.
January 15, 2025: Vietnam offers a 45-day visa exemption for nationals of Switzerland, Poland, and the Czech Republic who travel under tour programs organized by Vietnamese international tour operators.
- British National Overseas (BNO) passport holders are not eligible for the 15-day free visa exemption. Therefore, BNO passport holders must obtain a valid visa to visit Vietnam.
- APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) holders with valid passports are exempt from Vietnam visa requirements for stays of no longer than 60 days.
Phu Quoc Visa exemption
For the development of Phu Quoc Island (Kien Giang Province), Vietnam issued Decision 80/2013/QĐ-TTg on 27/12/2013 that foreigners can enter, exit, and stay on Phu Quoc Island without a Vietnam visa for a maximum of 30 days. The decision is applied to both foreigners entering Vietnam directly on Phu Quoc Island and those transiting at a Vietnam border gate (airport or seaport) and moving to Phu Quoc Island thereafter.
Requirements
Travelers have to follow some requirements below:
- Passport with 6-month validity upon arrival date.
- Flying from your residing country to Phu Quoc via Phu Quoc International Airport. No matter if direct/indirect/transit flights, your final destination must be Phu Quoc.
- A valid exit date (air ticket, cruise departure date, etc.) showing your duration of stay on Phu Quoc island is no longer than 30 days.
- Only airport or seaport is available for this visa type.
Visa exemption extensions
If you want to extend the period of stay beyond the allowed period, you can choose to exit and reenter the country. There is no requirement for gap between 2 entries, you can simply exit and reenter.
If you want to stay in Vietnam for longer than the maximum period allowed for each visa exemption type and do not want to exit and reenter , you must apply for an exemption extension.
Eligiblity
- Sponsored by Vietnamese agencies/organizations for reasonable reasons.
- Overseas Vietnamese and foreigners who are spouses or children of overseas Vietnamese or Vietnamese citizens holding foreign passports or equivalent international travel documents with at least 1 year of validity.
- Not being prohibited from entering or suspended from exiting Vietnam.
What to prepare
- A valid passport, or equivalent international travel documents, or permanent residence permit issued by a competent authority in a residing country to overseas Vietnamese.
- Application form for stay extension (Form NA5).
- Visa exemption certificate
