Latest regulations on foreigners entering Vietnam
Article 21 of the Law on Entry, Exit, Transit, and Residence of Foreigners in Vietnam stipulates cases where entry is not allowed, including:
- Reasons for national defense, security, order, and social safety;
- Reasons for natural disasters or for reasons of disease prevention and control;
- No passport or valid international travel documents and visa;
- People with mental illness or infectious diseases that endanger the community;
- Forging documents, making false statements to obtain entry, residence, and exit documents;
- Being deported from Vietnam within 3 years from the effective date of the deportation decision;
- Children under 14 years old without a parent, guardian, or authorized person accompanying them;
- Forced to leave Vietnam within 6 months from the effective date of the decision to force the exit.
In addition to the cases of not being allowed to enter Vietnam mentioned above, there are also a number of passport-related reasons that cause foreigners to be denied entry, specifically:
1. Expired foreign passport
Not only in Vietnam but also in many countries around the world, visitors' passports must be valid for more than 6 months before being allowed to enter the country. In some cases, passengers may be detained at the airport of the host country if their passport is valid for less than this amount.
To avoid being denied entry to Vietnam because their passport is not valid enough, foreigners should apply for a new passport about 9 months before the expiration date.
Note: A passport valid for at least 6 months is also a condition for foreigners to be granted a Vietnam entry visa.
2. Foreign passport is torn or damaged
A passport is a document used for exit, entry or identification of relatives and nationality, so all information shown on the passport must be accurate and clear.
If a foreign passport is torn, damaged or smudged, causing the information to be blurred or smudged, it will be suspected of being fake and will not be considered for entry into Vietnam.
3. Too few blank pages on foreign passports
A foreign passport with too few blank pages to affix a Vietnam visa stamp is also a reason why that passport is denied entry into Vietnam. Foreigners wishing to enter Vietnam must have at least 2 blank pages in their passports.
4. The photo on the passport is not the same as the outside
The portrait printed on the passport is the basis for comparison and verification of the user's identity. However, for some reasons, the photo printed on the passport is blurred, or does not match the real person, foreigners may be refused entry or exit procedures to Vietnam.
5. Chinese E passport with the nine-dash line printed on it
The Chinese E passport is considered an illegal passport in Vietnam because it has a "nine-dash map" printed on it. However, Vietnam will still create conditions for Chinese people using E passports to enter the country, but Vietnam will not affix a visa stamp on this passport, but will only issue a separate visa of equivalent value.
